HC Deb 09 November 1955 vol 545 c202W
Lady Tweedsmuir

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will make a statement on the recent strike in the fishing industry at Aberdeen.

Mr. J. Stuart

An unofficial strike of Aberdeen trawler crews started on 5th September in support of a demand for a registration scheme, with priority of engagement for union labour. Other workers later stopped work in sympathy. Following discussions between officials of the Transport and General Workers' Union and the Owners' Association it was announced on 29th September that vessels would resume sailing and negotiations on a registration scheme would take place. The fleet actually resumed sailing on 1st October.
