asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what progress is being made with the £1,200 million programme of railway modernisation and re-equipment.

Work is proceeding in accordance with the two-yearly forecast published by the British Transport Commission on 5th May. The Commission hopes to be in a position to make another forecast at the beginning of next year.
