§ Mr. Selwyn LloydThe cost of Service pay and allowances in 1954–55 was about £280 million. This figure includes pay, marriage allowance and local overseas allowance, but does not include allowances drawn in lieu of issues in kind, such as ration and clothing allowances, nor National Insurance contributions. The pay and allowances of the Brigade of Gurkhas and of locally raised overseas forces are also excluded. The cost of long service pensions (including retired pay, commutation and dependants' pensions) was £28.5 million.
