HC Deb 04 May 1955 vol 540 cc141-2W
Mr. Vaughan-Morgan

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware of the need for further guidance as to the best form of training for social workers in the local government services for which he is responsible; and if he will institute an inquiry into the matter.

Mr. Iain Macleod

Yes, my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and I, after consultation with the associations of local authorities, have decided to set up a working party to examine the proper field of work and the recruitment and training of social workers at all levels in the local authorities' health and welfare services under the National Health Service and National Assistance Acts and, in particular, whether there is a place for a general purposes social worker with an in-service training as a basic grade.
