§ 70. Lieut.-Colonel Bromley-Davenportasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will arrange for suitable corrective statements to be issued by the British Information Services in New York to counter the inaccurate statements which have recently appeared in United States newspapers to the effect that British planters in Malaya have been guilty of temporising with the terrorists, or paying them protection money.
§ Lord John HopeI understand my hon. and gallant Friend is referring to an article in a Malayan journal "The Planter" of March, 1955, which reproduced a despatch dated 13th February from the New York correspondent of an Australian paper quoting a report from a United States news agency correspondent in Singapore. As far as can be ascertained, this report, which was entirely inaccurate, was not carried in any of the leading newspapers in the United States, and no notice was taken of it.
