HC Deb 21 March 1955 vol 538 c159W
87. Mr. Russell

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies to make a statement on the position of the coffee industry in Uganda, especially on the difficulties of marketing the crop.

Mr. Hopkinson

Coffee production in Uganda has shown an increase over the last season, and owing to the sharp drop in world prices it will be necessary to draw substantially on the Coffee Price Assistance Fund to maintain the price guaranteed to African producers at the beginning of the season. I am informed that marketing is proceeding steadily and that prices realised at the Kampala auctions have been usually slightly above the corresponding New York quotations.
