HC Deb 02 March 1955 vol 537 cc265-6W
Mr. Benn

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs on how many occasions in the last year for which figures are available, the French authorities have requested the deportation of persons in Tangier; and what decisions were reached on these cases by Her Majesty's Consul General.

Lord John Hope

None.

Mr. Benn

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what political asylum is available for refugees who escape to the international zone of Tangier, for whose administration Her Majesty's Government is partially responsible; and by whom it is granted.

Lord John Hope

Subject to considerations of public order and to their possession of adequate means of livelihood, persons seeking political asylum are normally permitted by the Committee of Control of the International Zone to reside at least temporarily in Tangier. Responsibility for the admission of such persons is in the hands of the Committee of Control on which Her Majesty's Consul General has one vote out of eight.
