HC Deb 02 March 1955 vol 537 c281W
92. Mr. Chetwynd

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what conditions are attached to the grant of requests for discharge by purchase from the Royal Navy.

Commander Noble

Men are required to produce a "good and substantial reason" for wishing to purchase their discharge. If this is of a compassionate nature, immediate discharge is normally granted. If the reason is not of a compassionate nature, priority of release is determined by length of service in each class of engagement.
