HC Deb 02 March 1955 vol 537 c275W
Mr. Benn

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why the recognition was withdrawn from Chief Mpamba; why Green Zulu was appointed as his successor by the Provincial Commissioner since he was known to be unsympathetic to Congress; and if he will give an assurance that his appointment is acceptable to the Tumbuka people, whose chief he is to become.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

On the withdrawal of recognition for Chief Mpamba, I invite the hon. Member's attention to my reply to the hon. Member for Central Ayrshire (Mr. Manuel) on 15th December, 1954. Green Zulu has been selected as chief by the headmen and people of the area in accordance with native custom and is fully acceptable to them; whatever sympathy he may have or lack towards Congress has no bearing on his acceptability to the Tumbuka people.
