HC Deb 13 June 1955 vol 542 cc3-4W
20. Mr. J. R. H. Hutchison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many Britons are detained by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or its satellite countries.

Lord John Hope

As my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Arundel and Shoreham (Captain Kerby) was informed on 7th February last, the Foreign Office at present have a record of eleven alleged British subjects who are reported to be detained in the Soviet Union. In addition one person is known to be detained who is considered by the Russians to be a Soviet citizen, although she also possesses British nationality.

In Poland two British subjects, one of whom is also a Polish citizen, and in Roumania two British subjects, who also possess Roumanian nationality, are known to be under detention.
