Mr. Bennasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will reconsider the present arrangements by which appeals from Seychelles are heard in Mauritius; whether he will arrange for the Court of Appeal in East Africa to take over this responsibility in Mombasa; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. HopkinsonAppeals on criminal matters from Seychelles were transferred to the Eastern African Court of Appeal with effect from the 1st February, 1955. Civil appeals still lie to Mauritius, mainly because a large part of Seychelles Civil Law is French rather than English in origin. The Executive Council in Seychelles has recently considered and advised against the transfer of Seychelles Civil Appeals from Mauritius to East Africa.
