HC Deb 28 January 1955 vol 536 cc60-1W
Mr. Willey

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, what applications for grants for capital development by research associations have been refused during the past five years; and the reasons for such refusals.

Mr. Bevins

Only one application for a capital grant has been refused. The Motor Industry Research Association applied for a grant towards the cost of the high-speed circuit on the proving ground at Nuneaton but it was refused in February, 1952, on financial grounds.

Mr. Willey

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, how the additional £91,000 allocated to research associations is being apportioned between the various research associations.

Mr. Bevins

About £40,000 of the additional £91,000 allocated to research associations by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research during the present financial year is to provide increased grants for a number of existing associations and initial grants to the Chalk, Lime and Allied Industries Research Association, the British Steel Castings Research Association and the Timber Development Research Council. The remainder is for capital grants to the Electrical Research Association and the Production Engineering Research Association.
