§ Mr. WatkinsonThe number of men called up in 1954 was 147,975. In addition, 52,840 men in the National Service field of call-up joined the Forces on Regular engagements during the year. The number of deferments is estimated to have been approximately 120,000, including about 17,000 permanently deferred so long as the men remained in their employment. The number rejected on medical grounds was about 51,000.
