HC Deb 21 December 1955 vol 547 c344W
Sir A. Bossom

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he is aware that the new towns with their provision of lucrative employment attract farm workers from the land when these towns are situated in rural areas; and if he will give consideration to this hindrance to farmers when approving the sites for any new towns.

Mr. Sandys

The New Town Corporations produce houses as nearly as possible in step with the labour needs of expanding industries; and in the towns which are providing for decentralisation the employers are asked to recruit the workers they need from the congested areas. As for future new town sites, I am at present concentrating the main effort on the expansion of existing towns.
