HC Deb 21 December 1955 vol 547 c342W
Mr. Steward

asked the Minister of Education if he can estimate how long it will be before he receives the recommendations of the Burnham Committee in respect of the teachers' present application for revised scales of salary; and if he can give an assurance that payment of the award to be recommended will be retrospective to the date of application or award, irrespective of the date of implementation.

Sir D. Eccles

No. I can only say that I shall be ready to consider at any time and without delay any recommendation that the Committee may submit to me. The remuneration of teachers is governed by Orders made under Section 89 (1) of the Education Act, 1944, and I have no power to make such an Order with retrospective effect.

Brigadier Clarke

asked the Minister of Education to what extent he is in a position to expedite the findings of the Burnham Committee.

Sir D. Eccles

I have no reason to believe that the Burnham Committee requires any prodding.
