§ 71. Mr. Dyeasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what progress has been made in plant breeding establishments in this country towards developing a variety of sugar beet with a higher yielding sugar content; and how this compares with other countries which have made progress in this respect.
Mr. AmoryCertain commercial strains of sugar beet have been improved in recent years to yield a higher output of sugar, but there has been little change in the performance of the best strains. Comparison with progress in other countries is difficult, but I have no evidence that foreign strains tested here have shown greater improvement than strains being developed in this country.
