— 1954 1955 (first three-quarters) New Extension New Extension London and the Home Counties 247 550 221 565 Greater Birmingham Area 55 212 50 194 The figures relate to new industrial buildings and extensions to existing buildings, over 5,000 square feet, for manufacturing industry in London, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Middlesex and Surrey; and in the West Midlands Conurbation as defined in Table IV of the Preliminary Report of the 1951 Population Census. The figures include projects for the replacement of buildings destroyed by fire or enemy action, or otherwise demolished. "New" includes detached buildings not on the same site as the existing works, as well as entirely new undertakings.
