HC Deb 14 December 1955 vol 547 c192W
112. Captain Kerby

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation to consider using the old tramway subway from the Embankment to the top of Kingsway as a motor road, so as to ease the flow of north-south traffic in this area and at the same time prevent it from holding up the east-west traffic flow along the Strand.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

No. This matter has recently been examined by the London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee and its advice, with which I agree, is that there is no traffic use of the tunnel at the present time without prohibitive expenditure of funds which could be better used elsewhere on our roads. It is to consider the matter again in 1957.
