HC Deb 14 December 1955 vol 547 c176W
36. Mr. Vaughan-Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what attempts have been made to grow cotton in British Guiana.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Small-scale experiments with cotton have been going on since 1951, and an experienced officer has recently been appointed to investigate fully the economic possibilities of cotton production in the Colony.

37. Mr. Vaughan-Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the position regarding experiments in jute growing in British Guiana.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The experiments have not yet shown that jute can be grown commercially; the British Guiana Government are awaiting the outcome of the present crop before deciding whether they should be continued.
