HC Deb 12 December 1955 vol 547 c142W
119. Mr. Mason

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will conduct a survey to ascertain to what extent populations living in the vicinity of atomic energy plants are subject to increased radioactivity.

Mr. Sandys

The Atomic Energy Authority Act, 1954, requires the Authority to ensure that ionising radiations are not emitted from its premises or from any waste matter to an extent that would be harmful to persons or property. It is also required to keep the discharge of radioactive wastes within prescribed limits. The areas surrounding nuclear plants are regularly monitored; and I am satisfied that these requirements are being complied with.
