asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food the number of live horses imported from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, since the introduction of the Horses (Landing from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland) Order, 1954; how many were found on examination to be unfit to continue their journey, and had to be rested; and how many had to be slaughtered on the advice of the veterinary inspectors.

From 25th June, 1954, when the Order came into force, until 3rd December, 1955, 1,382 horses were landed from Northern Ireland; of these 50 were found to be, unfit to continue their journey and were detained for a period; none had to be slaughtered. From the Irish Republic, 8,795 horses were landed of which 258 were detained for a period and 69 were slaughtered on veterinary advice.
