§ LORD HANKEYasked Her Majesty's Government (1) how many Germans are now serving sentences as War Criminals on behalf of Great Britain, the United States of America and France respectively: (2) how many died or have been 594WA released in each case since the Written Answer published in Parliamentary Debates (Hansard) House of Lords, 11th February, 1954: (3) whether the Joint Review Boards for War Criminals in Western Germany are still functioning: (4) how many Germans are now serving sentences as War Criminals in France, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark and Norway, and how many are still awaiting trial or sentence.
THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (THE MARQUESS OF READING)1. 31 German war criminals remain confined by the British authorities at Werl. I am informed that 291 persons are serving United States sentences, of whom 213 are on parole, and that 37 war criminals are serving French sentences at Wittlich and Neuwied. I do not know how many of these are of non-German nationality.
2. No prisoners have died at Werl between February 11, 1954, and April 22, 1955. In that time 39 war criminals have been released from confinement there. This figure includes releases on expiry of sentence.
3. The Anglo-German Mixed Consultative Board on war criminals has completed its work.
4. As Her Majesty's Government have no responsibility for prisoners sentenced by the United States and French authorities, or by the authorities of the other countries mentioned in the fourth part of the question, I regret that I am unable to provide the further information requested.
