§ 74. Mr. G. Jegerasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will make a statement on the payment by Egypt of compensation to the families of British soldiers killed in the Canal Zone.
§ Sir A. EdenThe Agreement signed in Cairo last week provides for a waiver of all Governmental claims, whether United Kingdom or Egyptian, arising out of the presence of British troops in Egypt. This waiver extends to private claims concerning British and Egyptian Government servants who lost their lives or suffered injury as a result of conditions in Egypt after October, 1951.
In arriving at the waiver of Governmental claims, due credit was taken by Her Majesty's Government for claims of this kind and they will, therefore, be considered and dealt with by Her Majesty's Government and not by the Egyptian Government. Claims by Egyptian Government servants will similarly be dealt with by their own Government.
