Mr. Patrick Maitland

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many paid appointments to posts outside the Civil Service he is responsible for making; what is the nature of each appointment; and what salary is payable in each case.

The appointments are as follows:

II.—APPOINTMENTS MADE JOINTLY BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE, THE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES AND THE MINISTER OF FOOD AND THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT
White Fish Authority
Chairman £4,000 a year.
Deputy Chairman and Chairman of Committee for Scotland and Northern Ireland (part-time) £2,000 a year.
Member £3,000 a year (of which Herring Industry Board pay £400).
Member (part-time) £1,500 a year.
Member (part-time) £500 a year.
Committee for Scotland and Northern Ireland(under Chairmanship of Deputy Chairman of Authority)
5 Members Each £500 a year.
Herring Industry Board
Chairman (part-time) £2,000 a year.
2 Members (part-time) £400 a year.

III.—APPOINTMENTS MADE JOINTLY BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE, THE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES AND THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT
Vice-chairman of the Wheat Commission
(Part-time) £700 a year.
This salary is paid from the Wheat Fund.
Merchandise Marks Act (Standing Committee)
Chairman £13 2s. 6d. a day when Committee is sitting.
2 Members £10 10s. a day when Committee is sitting.
Wool Marketing Board
3 Members Salaries are fixed by Producers at their Annual General Meeting and are paid out of the Board's Funds.

IV.—APPOINTMENTS MADE JOINTLY BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE AND THE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES
Tomato and Cucumber Marketing Board
4 Members Salaries are fixed by Producers at their Annual General Meeting and are paid out of the Board's Funds.

V.—APPOINTMENTS MADE JOINTLY BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE AND THE MINISTER OF HEALTH
Awards Committee.
Chairman (part-time) 2,000 guineas a year.
14 Members 7 guineas a day (paid only to Members who are retired).

VI.—APPOINTMENTS MADE JOINTLY BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE AND THE MINISTER OF HOUSING AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Central Land Board
Chairman (part-time) £2,000 a year.
9 Members £500 a year.
Only six members have been appointed. The Chairman and Members are also respectively Chairman and Members of the War Damage Commission without extra remuneration.

VII.—APPOINTMENTS MADE JOINTLY BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE AND THE MINISTER OF FUEL AND POWER
North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board
4 Members (part-time) £750 a year.
3 Members (part-time) £500 a year.
(The present Chairman and Deputy Chairman do not draw any salary.)

NOTES:

1. Judges, Sheriffs Principal, Sheriffs Substitute and the Chairman and Members of the Land Court are appointed by the Crown on the recommendation of the Secretary of State.

2. The Secretary of State is also responsible for appointing the auditor of the accounts of all Scottish local authorities, the State Management Districts in Scotland, the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board, the Legal Aid Fund, and the Herring Industry Board.
