HC Deb 24 November 1954 vol 533 c125W
71. Mr. Dugdale

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what contribution is made by farmers in Kenya in return for help given them in reconditioning their farms by Mau Mau convicts under the supervision of agricultural officers.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

In order to deal with a severe infestation of rhinceros beetle in certain coconut plantations, the Government are taking action to destroy dead and dying trees. Convict labour is being employed. The cost is recoverable from the plantation owners under the law.
