HC Deb 17 November 1954 vol 533 c39W
74. Mrs. White

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if famine conditions still prevail in parts of Tanganyika; and to what extent assistance has been received from sources outside the territory.

Mr. Hopkinson

Near famine conditions still prevail in certain parts of the Central Province of Tanganyika, following poor rainfall in two consecutive seasons. Food supplies in the territory generally are adequate, and Government have the position well in hand. The United Nations International Children's Fund have generously given 1,200 tons of dried milk for women, children and old people in the area.
