HC Deb 17 November 1954 vol 533 cc41-2W
91. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General whether he is aware that some people in Newport have been waiting over eight years for telephone service; and what action he is taking for expediting the matter in this area, especially in view of the long list of applicants requiring a telephone in Newport.

Mr. Gammans

Yes. I regret that nine people have had to wait so long for telephone service: in each case there are no spare wires in the local cable, but additional cables are planned for their localities. Over 700 telephones were connected in Newport during the past 12 months, and the number of applications on hand has been reduced by 400. New exchange equipment and cables are being provided, and we shall do our best to maintain this high level of supply in the coming year.
