Mr. Sorensenasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies approximately how many persons are employed in workshops and factories in Hong Kong; how many are engaged in piece work in their own homes in order to supply manufacturers; and when consideration was last given to the question of factory and workshop conditions and hours of work in Hong Kong.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydAccording to the latest information available here, there were about 100,000 workers in registered factories and workshops in March, 1953. No figure for domestic piece workers can be given, but the numbers engaged in small cottage industries as a whole were estimated in 1953 at 50,000. Present-day figures are probably higher. Measures for improving working conditions and for regulating hours of work are under constant review and under most difficult circumstances inspectorate staff do their best to enforce factory law.
