HC Deb 03 November 1954 vol 532 c49W
90. Mr. T. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps he has taken to meet the request of the Fiji Legislature for a United Kingdom Commission to report on the problem created in Fiji by the rapid rise in population caused by a birthrate of about 40 per 1,000.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

After carefully studying the request referred to, my predecessor informed the Governor of Fiji that further information on the basic economic and agricultural resources of the Colony was needed before the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry from this country would be justified. This despatch was laid before the Legislative Council, and I am awaiting a reply from the Governor.
