HC Deb 31 May 1954 vol 528 c61W
Mr. Mulley

asked the Minister of Health to publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT the scale of charges he recommends local authorities to make for children at day nurseries; to what extent these are varied by the local authorities; and the amount of grant his department contributes to the cost of the upkeep of day nurseries, if they observe his recommendations, and in other cases.

Mr. Iain Macleod

No scales of charges for day nurseries have been recommended to local health authorities, who have power to make such charges as they consider reasonable having regard to the means of the persons concerned. Where provided, day nurseries form part of arrangements for the care of mothers and young children under Section 22 of the National Health Service Act, 1946, and the normal Exchequer grant of 50 per cent. of the net expenditure is payable.
