HC Deb 26 May 1954 vol 528 cc22-3W
69. Mr. P. Williams

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when the phasing scheme at the port of Mombasa will come to an end.

Mr. Lyttelton

I hope during next year.

75. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps he is taking to increase the efficiency of the Kenya railway system; and when he contemplates the end of the cargo phasing system at Mombasa harbour.

Mr. Lyttelton

Firm delivery dates have been arranged for the long-awaited new railway equipment and the United Kingdom manufacturers are being constantly pressed to adhere to and if possible to improve on the dates for the completion of orders. Coupled with new local works, the material now coming forward should raise the capacity of the port and railway to a satisfactory level by the end of 1955.

For the answer to the second part of the Question, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply I have given to the hon. Member for Sunderland, South (Mr. P. Williams).
