HC Deb 24 May 1954 vol 528 cc4-5W
Dr. Broughton

asked the Minister of Education the annual cost to her Department for the education and training of medical students in the medical schools of England and Wales.

Miss Horsbrugh

The number of students taking medical courses in the current academic year with grants from my Department is 1,948, of whom 1,121 hold State scholarships and 827 hold awards under the Further Education and Training Scheme. I estimate the cost in fees and maintenance for the year at approximately £574,000. In addition, my Department admits for grant the expenditure of local education authorities on making awards to students taking medical courses; but the returns of the authorities do not enable me to isolate this expenditure from their other expenditure on awards.
