HC Deb 11 March 1954 vol 524 c177W
81. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he will take steps to compensate smallholders of modest means, such as Mr. N. Trechman of Pikelands, Harvington, Evesham, who have been dispossessed from their freeholds, in order that they may meet claims from the agricultural executive committees, amounting to several hundreds of pounds, for redecorating homes from which they have been forcibly evicted and of which the standard of repair was adequate for their own requirements.

Mr. Nugent

No. Owner-occupiers like Mr. Trechman who are dispossessed on grounds of bad husbandry are not dispossessed of the freehold of the land; their occupation of it is terminated. The Act provides that, where the land is not let to an approved tenant, the Minister has a claim against the owner for dilapidations, to be determined, if necessary, by arbitration.
