§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterExact figures are not available, but I should estimate the number of civil servants who retired on pensions exceeding £375 a year between August, 1945, and June, 1953, at about 5,000. The only form of Civil Service pension which may be commuted is a compensation allowance for abolition of office. Five civil servants who retired with such compensation allowances during the period in question commuted their allowances in part.
