§ 54. 54. Mr. Swinglerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how much money from Government funds has been spent on Civil Defence since he took office; how much of this sum has been spent in Staffordshire; and what proportion of the total has been spent on measures designed to protect the population from atom and hydrogen bomb attacks.
§ Sir D. Maxwell FyfeThe hon. Member will find particulars of the actual expenditure of the several Departments on Civil Defence in each of the years 1949–50 to 1952–53 and of the estimated expenditure in 1953–54 set out in Tables154W been charged with wilful murder or manslaughter during each of the last five years; and how many were convicted.
§ Sir D. Maxwell FyfeThe number of male persons under the age of 18 against whom charges of murder or manslaughter are preferred is not recorded, but statistics are available of the number of such persons committed for trial on either of these charges and of the results of the trials. The following table gives the figures:
I and II of the recent Report of the Select Committee on Estimates, of which I am sending the hon. Member a copy. It is impossible, however, to divide the expenditure for 1951–52 into amounts before and after I took office. I regret that it is not practicable to say how much of this expenditure should be attributed to the protection of Staffordshire. It is not possible to give separate figures in respect of protection against particular forms of attack.
