HC Deb 16 June 1954 vol 528 c141W
38. Sir R. Robinson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what information he has about the recent attempt to destroy the statue of Queen Victoria in Georgetown, British Guiana, by dynamite; and what steps are being taken to prevent the repetition of this and other similar acts of vandalism, particularly those directed against churches.

Mr. Lyttelton

Explosives have been used in three recent incidents. At about 2 a.m. on 26th May, the statue of Queen Victoria standing in front of the Victoria Law Courts in Georgetown was damaged by two explosions. Police patrols have been increased and military patrols introduced in certain quarters. Members of the Volunteer Force are being used to guard vulnerable points, and measures for the stricter control of explosives have been introduced.
