HC Deb 04 June 1954 vol 528 c121W
Mr. Ian Harvey

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air what special training methods were used during the exercise "Liontrek," which was held in Fife on 14th-15th May.

Mr. Ward

Exercises such as "Lion-trek" are held from time to time to train Service personnel in evading capture, in escape after capture, and in conduct during captivity. This is a necessary part of training, especially for aircrew. So far as, possible, active Service conditions are simulated, based on experienced gained in war. Great care is taken to avoid risk of injury to health, although it is part of the object of this training to exercise powers of endurance. Therefore only fit men are allowed to take part. The use of violence is expressly forbidden.
