HC Deb 04 June 1954 vol 528 c126W
Mr. Parkin

asked the President of the Board of Trade what percentage of the total United Kingdom exports of metal-working machine-tools were exported to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in the years 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936 and 1937, respectively.

Mr. Amory

The percentages were, respectively: 81, 49, 34, 26, 16, 10.

Mr. Sorensen

asked the President at the Board of Trade if he will make a further statement as to the value of the orders placed in the last 12 months by the Soviet Government with British firms; and how far these orders may be implemented under the present security controls.

Mr. Amory

On the information available, the value of orders placed with United Kingdom firms by the Soviet Government in the last 12 months is estimated at about £40 million. About one half of these orders could be implemented under the existing security controls. My right hon. Friend regrets that, in answering the hon. Member's supplementary question on 25th May on this point, he made an error which may have misled the House.
