asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what expenses are incurred in keeping a naval attaché in Moscow; and what facilities are given him for acquiring information about the Soviet Navy.

Mr. J. P. L. Thomas

Approximately £24,600. No special facilities are made available to him for acquiring information about the Soviet Navy though he has the normal opportunities of meeting senior Soviet naval officers. His primary task is to provide advice on naval questions to our ambassador.

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air what expenses are incurred in keeping an air attaché in Moscow; and what facilities are given him for acquiring information about the Soviet Air Force.

Mr. Ward

The annual cost of keeping the air attaché and his staff in Moscow is about £43,000. They have much the same facilities for acquiring information as have the Soviet air attaché and his staff in London.
