HC Deb 01 June 1954 vol 528 c74W
Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what plans for social security are contemplated in Northern Rhodesia, in view of the rapidly growing industrialisation of that Colony.

Mr. Lyttelton

In the principal industry in Northern Rhodesia, the copper companies have announced their intention to introduce a non-contributory pension scheme for all African workers, and two other large employers of labour, namely, the Government and Rhodesian Railways, provide pensions and medical assistance in certain circumstances for employees of all races. The possibility of further action by the Government in this field is being explored.
