§ 120. Mr. Ernest Daviesasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether, in view of the increasing number of road accidents in the New Forest, due to wandering ponies, he will restrict the permitted speed on those roads on which no speed limit is now imposed, and introduce cattle-grids where needed.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydI have been gravely concerned by the increase in the number of road accidents in the New Forest and recently convened a meeting of local authorities and other interested bodies under the chairmanship of my divisional road engineer to consider what might be done to reduce the risk of accidents caused by animals without serious interference with the amenities of the New Forest.
I am now considering his report. He does not recommend the imposition of speed limits in the New Forest except in built-up areas. He points out that cattle grids would not be effective unless the roads were fenced and he does not recommend fencing of the trunk road until it is reconstructed with dual carriageways. Fencing of other roads is not permitted by the Acts relating to the forest.
