§ 91. Mr. Robson Brownasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what statistics are available regarding the shattering of motor car windscreens on British roads in the past three years; what are the separate figures for such incidents as have been reported as taking place on or about the Portsmouth Road, Esher; to what extent these incidents have been confined only to windscreens made of toughened glass; and what conclusions the Metropolitan police have arrived at regarding the series of incidents which have occurred in and around Esher.
§ Sir D. Maxwell FyfeNo statistics are available for the country as a whole. Between 1st January, 1951, and 16th January, 1954, 67 motor car windscreens were reported to the police to have been shattered on the Portsmouth Road, at Esher. Such information as is available suggests that most of the windscreens were made of toughened glass. The Commissioner of Police has no reason to believe that the damage generally is attributable to malicious action.
