§ Mr. Wiggasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Defence what qualifications are required by students attending the Imperial Defence College; what is the number of students entering the college each year; the length and purpose of the courses; and the cost of instruction and maintenance, per annum, for each student.
§ Mr. BirchStudents at the Imperial Defence College are selected from officers of the rank of captain, Royal Navy, or equivalent in the fighting Services and from civil servants of the rank of assistant secretary or equivalent. Each course comprises about 60 students and last for one year. Its object is to produce a body of senior officers, both military and civil who will be capable of holding high commands and key appointments in peace and war.
The cost of instruction per student, including instructional tours at home and overseas, is approximately £1,100 per annum.
There are no maintenance charges as the Imperial Defence College is a non-residential establishment.
