HC Deb 21 January 1954 vol 522 c180W
75. Mr. Swingler

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will now prohibit the use of calomel in the manufacture of teething powders.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

I have no power to prohibit the use of calomel in the manufacture of teething powders, but I understand that the only firm known to have been manufacturing such powders wholesale in recent times has decided to omit this ingredient. Retail pharmacists who manufacture their own brands of teething or soothing powders have been advised in the Pharmaceutical Journal to use safe aperients in lieu of calomel.
