HC Deb 21 January 1954 vol 522 c182W
83. Mr. Erroll

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is satisfied that he has adequate powers to prevent public mischief under the guise of an unofficial industrial dispute; and what steps he is taking to prevent public mischief.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

It is no part of my responsibilities to intervene in an industrial dispute, official or unofficial. The enforcement of the law and the maintenance of public order are, in the first instance, matters for the police, and I have no reason to be dissatisfied under either head. It is, of course, the duty of any Government to take such measures as are necessary and reasonable for securing the essentials of life to the community.
