HC Deb 21 January 1954 vol 522 cc187-8W
93. Brigadier Medlicott

asked the Minister of Labour if his attention has been drawn to the cases where workmen engaged in digging trenches for drains and sewers have been killed by the collapse of the sides of the trenches; and if he will examine the safety regulations on this subject with a view to their being strengthened if necessary, especially in respect of excavation work carried on during wet weather.

Mr. Watkinson

Yes. Such fatalities are required to be reported to the Factory Inspector who investigates the circumstances. Investigation has not shown need for amendment of the current regulations which relate to excavations in connection with building operations, but I am considering extending them to cover other kinds of work.
