HC Deb 21 January 1954 vol 522 cc175-6W
66. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the present tax on fuel oil which is used by most omnibus companies now amounts to 2s. 6d. per gallon or over 214 per cent. on the basic price of the fuel; and, in view of the fact that its consumption bears more heavily on poorer people and is now higher than any maximum form of taxation on luxuries, he will reduce or abolish the present tax.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

While not necessarily accepting the arguments in the hon. Member's Question, my right hon. Friend will consider this matter in the preparation of his coming Budget.
