asked the Minister of Labour the number of women over the age of 50 years registered as unemployed in England and Wales on the last date for which figures are available; and the corresponding figures at the same time in 1953.

Nineteen thousand, five hundred and sixty-one at 7th December, 1953, and 23,417 at 8th December, 1952. Age-analyses are obtained at half-yearly intervals, and 7th December is the latest date for which figures are available. The figures relate to persons who were registered as wholly unemployed.
