HC Deb 11 February 1954 vol 523 c163W
109. Mr. Peart

asked the Minister of Education how many classes in primary schools on 1st January, 1954, or at the last convenient date, had over 40 and over 50 pupils, respectively.

Miss Horsbrugh

I shall have no more recent figures than those which I circulated on 22nd October last in the Official Report until the returns for January, 1954, in respect of each school have been received and analysed. The new figures will be available next October.

110. Mr. Peart

asked the Minister of Education how many classes in secondary modern and secondary grammar schools, respectively, on 1st January, 1954, or at the last convenient date, had over 40 and 50 pupils, respectively.

Miss Horsbrugh

In January, 1953, the number of classes in maintained secondary modern schools with over 40 pupils on roll was 2,438 of which 25 had over 50 pupils. The corresponding figures formaintained and assisted secondary grammar schools were 77 and 10. Some of these apparently large classes were assembled only for registration purposes.
