HC Deb 11 February 1954 vol 523 c143W
6. Mr. Watkins

asked the President of the Board of Trade what representations his Department has had about the introduction of light industries to Knighton, Llandrindod Wells, Presteigne and Rhayader, situated within the survey area of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire; andwhat efforts have been made to set up suitable light industries in these places.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

My Department has received several representations from the local authorities asking for help in finding new industries. We have been doing our best, and in one case we have found a suitable enterprise for vacant premises. As the hon. Member knows, industry is not easily attracted to the area, and the Second Memorandum of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire did not envisage factory development there, except in some sort of ancillary relationship with agriculture and forestry.
